Class Discussion

Posted by julierobert in Uncategorized

So theres a CLEAR reason as to why i am not “specializing” (thank you tommy) in education… i am not talented at teaching things to people. SO my discussion plans are VERY organized. my formula is

1. Summarize topics

2. Ask questions- start discussion between class

3. Bring everything back to main point, tie loose ends

4. The end….

there you go: fool proof plan… hopefully

The Chronology of my Life

Posted by julierobert in Uncategorized

December 18th 1987- I am born, one month early in Arlington, VA

July 27th 1989- My brother, Thibault, is born also in Arlington, VA

Nov 1989- My family moves into a home in Springfield Va, (6337 Camilla St)

January 1990- My family meets the Crafts- A family that will within the next few years become my surrogate family and whose daughter will become my best friend

July 21 1999- My parents tell my brother and i that they will not be staying together any longer- my Dad moves out

Sept 2002- I join the rowing team at my high school, purely based on the fact that i dont have to try out for it

Feb 2003- I become a Coxswain because my crew coach deems me too light to be a rower even though i am 4 inches taller than the average coxswain. From this point on, my weight will be scrutinized on a weekly basis by my team/coach.

Oct 2004- I compete with my crew at the head of the Schukill, and Head of the Charles (two incredibly competitive races in Philly and Boston)

Oct 2004- I go on a date with someone who i unknowingly will spend the next 3 years of my life with.

Mar 2005- I try out for the US Junior National Team on the recommendations of my coaches (they think im a shoo-in)

May 2005- I find out that because of Coach politics, i do not make the US Junior National Team, i Also find out that the girl who beats me was the one i tried out against and coincidentally whos coach is the one making the decisions as to who makes the team.

Sept 2005- I Audition (because i lose a bet) for a Ladies Select Choir at my high school and much to my surprise, i make it. (i have never sang before)

Sept 2005- I quit doing crew competitively and reject several offers to be recruited to colleges for their Varsity teams.

Feb 2006- I am Accepted to my 3rd choice school, Mary Washington, This is a school i have never visited but that i was made to apply to by my mother.

June 20, 2006- I Graduate from High School

June 21, 2006- I Leave for France with my two Best Friends for 2 weeks. This is the trip that ushers in the rest of my life, my parents do not realize that i have never gone a trip alone and this one truly helps me discover who i am.

Aug 23rd 2006- Move in to school at Mary Washington, begin living in Russell 311 with two girls who will become like sisters to me.

Sept 2006- Try out for BellAcappella- Make it!

Sept 18 2006- My mother moves back to Nice, France and i begin living with a man (my father) who i barely know.

Dec 18 2006- The only house ive ever lived in is sold. 6337 camilla st is now only a wonderful memory in the minds of many friends and I.

Feb 2007- I watch the Movie, Invisible Children: Rough Cut. It changes my life.

Feb 2007- My Grandfather dies. (an explanation is not enough for how much this impacts my life)

April 2007- The Invisible Children- Umw Chapter is granted Club Status with me as its president

July 2007- I begin Singing Open mic Nights at the prompting of my musical friends, incidentally i realize i do actually enjoy singing on stage.

July 2007- My father marries the woman he left my mother for.

Oct 2007- My boyfriend of three years and i break up, both of us realize that we are more friends than we are anything else and both begin to be happier than we’ve ever been.

Nov 2007- A new little sister is Born, her name will be Nathalie Elizabeth Robert. (She is not born yet, but will be within the next week!)

Ive included these events because they are the ones that have made me who i am and have greatly influenced how i live my life. I have grown because of these events in my life and i have realized many wonderful and not so wonderful things about me as a result of these things. Ive realized that i love to sing and that i give up too easily, that i love my family and still dont feel at home when i am not oncamilla st. These are the main events in my life and the only one i will remember 20 years from now.

The role of Chronology in a historical Narrative is to Organize the events of ones life so that another can see the distance in time between significant events and make assumptions as to why one thing happened and if it is a result of anything else.

Lit Review

Posted by julierobert in Uncategorized

So ive decided in the last couple days (from working on my lit review) that historiography is really quite interesting! When i first looked over the syllabus i was expecting the lit review to be one of the most mind numbing assignments, but actually, ive really enjoyed researching literature written on a topic and the differences between them. I had never approached secondary sources like that and it really shocked me how you can divide literature on so many levels. ok welll back to RE RE RE writing my paper….

true or false?

Posted by julierobert in Uncategorized

Guess which one is real! Both are about my Freshman year winter break

All alone. For two whole weeks. Just my best friend and me! I couldn’t believe it. My dad had just told me that he and his girlfriend were going on vacation to the Bahamas and that I would be responsible for the house, on the condition that my Best friend Becky agreed to stay with me (which she did without hesitation). Although this would make very little difference in my summer since I was working full time, the idea that I was living on my own with my best friend in a huge house was incredibly exciting regardless. My dad began rattling off responsibilities I would have and finally he finished off with “We’ll be leaving on Wednesday, so try and be home tomorrow night so I can go over everything with you again” Wait, WHAT? Wednesday was the day after tomorrow. Frazzled and confused I answered a meek “ umm ok ill see you tomorrow.” I had a gig tonight; this was the last thing I needed! Tuesday night came around and I was sitting at my dining room table being told how to exactly water the lawn. Having calmed down and accepted their sudden vacation plans, I could clearly focus on how to exactly angle the sprinklers. Suddenly something came to mind, “Dad, with Elizabeth pregnant, should she really be flying to another country, especially a tropical one?” My dad and his Girlfriend had clearly gone through a midlife crisis and now were expecting child in the fall. He answered with a smile, “well actually, I thought I should tell you when we got back, but I might as well now, we’re actually going to get married in the Bahamas.” My father, the constant bachelor (or so he liked to think) was getting tied down one more time? Not to mention he was telling his only daughter barely a week before he was actually doing it? Dumbfounded for the second time in less than 48 hours, I just said quick congrats and headed off to call my best friend and tell her this unreal twist in my life. Just as confused as I, she said, “Wait so they’re eloping? What are they going to do after, party it up with the natives?” Just the kind of comic relief I needed for such an odd situation.

I couldn’t wait, this would mean parties every night, being able to do anything I wanted and not caring for a whole two weeks! However, I took for granted that my dad knew I would think this way, “Julie, don’t even think about having any parties or anything, I will know and I am not ok with that” uhhgg- he knew me so well. Oh well, he would never actually know, that was just something parents said to scare their kids. I’m 19, I’m not stupid, I can just have a few small get-togethers and it will be like nothing happened. They left a couple weeks later and that first night I had a few people over. Everything was went so smoothly, I became more confident that my father would never know. Throughout the two weeks they were gone, I had people over almost every night and although the house was a bit of a mess on the day they were supposed to get home, I wasn’t too worried. I knew I could clean it all up in about 2 hours and they were going to be home very late that night. After a day of shopping, I went to my door to open it up and suddenly realized I had left my keys inside. My door locks automatically and I had just pulled it shut when I had left that morning. Frantically, I ran to the back door, locked. I checked every window, locked. And since my house is somewhat older, the non automatic garage, was also locked. If I didn’t get in that house, my dad would know what I had been up to for the past two weeks. I HAD to get inside. I went next door and asked the neighbors if they had a key, she said she would go check and as she came back she said “it’s a good thing I could find this, I wasn’t sure where I had put it” Relief flooded my mind. I got into my house and did the best cleaning job I had ever done. To this day my father still has absolutely no idea.

Take a guess!!

Chapter 10

Posted by julierobert in Uncategorized

Chapter ten of “The New American History” specifically looks at answering several questions about social history, what is social history? does it explain historical change? can it help us understand our past? By looking at how the field of Social history has emerged and evolved, Alice Kessler-Harris attempts to answer these questions. Social history went through a significant change in the 1960′s. Before this change social history was simply “history without politics” however, this began to change and now we see social history as “a history of society”, one that includes but is most definitely not limited to thee history of social relationships, social structure and both everyday and private life. Today, Social history primarily circles around the power of diversity and different cultures. Social History encourages you to to focus on social relationships and how they change and the actions that they take. Sources used in this essay include largely Journal articles that seem to add background knowledge and legitimacy to the author’s argument but arent really seen when she makes a new point or claim. This makes it seem as if the ideas presented here truly are hers and she is only using other resources to further back up what she has concluded. This essay gave a very concise view of social history and explained well the evolution it has gone through.

5. How will you use the source for your paper?
as a view of Blackbeard by scholars today. Also for reference and dates

6. What are some of the problems that you foresee in using this source for your paper?
This source is quite lengthy and for a man that was only in the forefront of history for two years and even then not much is known about him, i am afraid that this source is embellished a decent amount

Note taking skills

Posted by julierobert in Uncategorized

So note taking happens to be a forte of mine, particularly i use my computer and the note function on mac word. Outline style notes work really well for me either in class or during research. Using my computer gives me the advantage of being able to better organize my notes, copy and paste things if i need it, and also i find it difficult to lose my notes. Also since i dont like to waste paper, this system works really well for me.

Websites!

Posted by julierobert in Uncategorized

So basically there are TONS of incredibly weiiird websites on my topic, i mean literally people go crazy on blackbeard. one fantastic example of a (clearly) obsesses individual:

http://www.blackbeardlives.com/

yea, words cant even describe this website (at least the first page)

however, in the midst of all these crazy web-pages there are several really useful ones like this one:

http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/maritime/blackbeard/default.htm

this one is actually really cool because if you look around enough you can actually see the artifacts they’ve retrieved from “The Queen Anne’s Revenge” and other neat stuff…
